United States Representative Nick Lampson visited with Lynda Guidry in his Washington office after he was sworn into office for a fourth term. He said defense and security, health care, and the economy are at the top of the nation's agenda. "The local projects that drive our local economy, the improvements to the ports, security at our ports, security at airports, that make it possible for people to travel more easily are all going to get a lot of attention over the next period of time," Lampson said. "I think you are going to see increased use of technology for security purposes." Lampson said the economy of Southeast Texas remains strong despite national problems. "We tend to lag behind the rest of the country in some of our economic downturns," Lampson said. "We are still fairly strong. There is a lot of growth. There has been a lot of construction that has been happening, both with highways and primarily in the petrochemical industry." Lampson said he will be home in the district almost every weekend during the session. "It is a huge pleasure to try to be of service to the Gulf Coast region and Southeast Texas." Texas State Representative-elect Larry Taylor will be sworn into office on Tuesday, with a busload of Galveston and Harris County residents on hand to observe the ceremony. "The governor has already made two emergency assignments for us, homeowners insurance and medical malpractice," Taylor noted in an interview with Guidry News Service. "We will be dealing with those first thing." Taylor said the budget also will be a major issue to be addressed by the legislature. "We've also got tort reform, which affects a lot of different areas, not just medical tort reform" he noted. "We will be working on lawsuit abuse." Taylor says he will establish an email communications system to stay in touch with his constituents. League City "State of the City Address" League City Mayor Jeff Harrison delivered his first "State of the City Address" to the League City Chamber of Commerce on Friday, at the South Shore Harbour Country Club. He said League City is in good shape. "The city council did a good job this past year by reducing the tax rate and also for the first time, reduced the water and sewer rate." Harrison
said the city's economic development efforts have been
extended to California, New Braunfels and Houston.
“We went there and told them, ‘We want you to come to
League City. We have a lot to offer.’” Harrison said the Schiltterbahn Park may not be located in League City, "but if it is in Galveston County, that's good for the whole county." He noted that American National Insurance Company is about to start construction of a $35 million office building and data center. Harrison also reviewed several road projects and transportation improvement programs. Groundwater Management District Association The Groundwater Management District Association, composed of local groundwater management districts in several Midwestern and Southern states, is meeting at the Hotel Galvez in Galveston this week. "At our annual meeting we have presentations from noted experts in the fields of groundwater, geology, flow meters and different management strategies," said a GMDA news release. "This provides us with a forum to exchange ideas on the different approaches taken by other states." The GMDA web site notes that there are regional differences. "For example, the primary issue in Kansas, Colorado and Texas is groundwater quantity, while in Nebraska it is groundwater quality. Some of the districts have developed unique projects in education and management to preserve our groundwater resources for future generations." This afternoon, Ron Neighbors, general manager of the Harris-Galveston Coastal Subsidence District is scheduled to speak to the group. Galveston Zoning Board of Adjustment Correction:

from sign regulations for Emmanuel Presbyterian Church at

lessons on art and life ensue when the purchase of a
white-on-white painting throws the friendship of three men
into turmoil," says a Strand Theatre news release.
"Marc and Yvan are less than enthusiastic about Serge's
recent acquisition, which cost him a small fortune, and have
a difficult time hiding their feelings. The result is a
hilarious send-up of modern art in this 1998 Tony Award
winner. Galveston director/actor Michael Wonio
