Houston Public Library

Houston Public Library Director Barbara A.B. Gubbin announced today that she will leave the city at the end of the year to become the director of the Jacksonville Public Library, in Florida.

"We have more library branches open than ever before and we can't thank Barbara Gubbin enough for all she's done for the city," said Mayor Bill White. "We'll be looking for someone who has vision about the libraries of the future and multiple information sources, and is dedicated to customer service and improvements in our neighborhoods." "It has been an honor to serve as the director of this exceptional library system," said Gubbin. "As director I have had the opportunity to be part of numerous innovative and successful projects as well as working with a talented and dedicated staff who strive every day to achieve the Library's vision of being a world-class library in a world-class city. I have also been fortunate to have had a supportive and hard-working Board of Trustees and three Friends groups, Friends of the Houston Public Library, of the Clayton Library Center for Genealogical Research, and of the Texas Room. I will certainly miss everyone."

Gubbin has served the Houston Public Library in various capacities since 1985. Since becoming director in 1995, she has overseen library expansion, with five new branch library buildings built and opened, one of which is a joint collaboration with Harris County. White has designated Toni Lambert, the current deputy of library operations, to be acting director effective January 1.
