Nonie
Thompson was presented the Galveston
Historical Foundation Steel Oleander Award,
in a ceremony at Garten Verein.
The Galveston Historical
Foundation presents the Steel
Oleander award
each year to a woman whose
independence,
progressive thinking and community
service
continue the tradition of Miss Bette
Brown,
the colorful daughter of James
Moreau Brown
who presided over banquets at Ashton
Villa.
We know Robinson for her untiring
efforts in the Division of Special
Services.
Her other innovative work
established a
system for specialist consulting and
health-
provider education in the outlying
districts of
East Texas through telemedicine, and
medical
outreach missions to Mexico. But
Robinson
was in private practice for over
twenty years
serving the Galveston community
before
“retiring,” as she says, to
assume duties at
UTMB in pediatric rehabilitation.
In her spare time, she served eight
years
as president of the East End
Historical
Association and one year as
president of the
Galveston Historical Foundation. Her
aim
Grand Rounds, and a special luncheon
for
third year residents and alumni
representatives.
The focus of the day was to provide
insights
and information to our pediatric
residents
about the real life practice of
medicine.
In June of 2000, at the UTMB
Pediatric
Review and Update, we will hold an
Alumni/
Resident Reception—an evening
allowing res-
idents to discuss practice
opportunities, career
choices, and personal and family
lifestyles
with practicing physicians.
Rebecca (Becky) Risinger, MD, our
Alumni Secretary-Treasurer
(1-409-938-8466
or crrising@UTMB.EDU), is working
diligently to develop these and
other activities
to encourage mentoring and
communication
with residents. Please share your
ideas and
your time to encourage our younger
colleagues.
Dr. Sally S. Robinson
was to preserve what remained and to
help
recreate the ambiance that imbued
the elegant
old frame and stone buildings at the
core of our
city. “Our history is comparable
to Boston’s or
Charleston’s,” she says. “That
is the reason I
chose to stay here.”

committee (himself and Drs. Travis
and Bryan)
in defining the objectives of
medical education.
More than 60 of the nation’s
medical
schools requested this statement. It
became
the base of the American Board of
Pediatrics’
definition of a competent
pediatrician. The
National Board of Medical Examiners
used it
for its Comprehensive Qualifying
Exam-
ination, later renamed the United
States
Medical Licensing Examination—the
examination by which all physicians
are
certified for licensure in the
United States.
Professor Levine was one of those
who
changed a medical tradition older
than our
country. “The monumental nature of
this
work,” as Dr. Daeschner put it,
“[will be] the
enduring tribute to [Professor
Levine’s] skill,
patience, and tenacity.”
Dr. Armond S. Goldman, a graduate of
UTMB, joined the Department of
Pediatrics
as Instructor in 1958. Revisit the
1998 Summer
Issue of theGrowth Chartfor a
fuller statement
of his contributions to both the
Department of
Pediatrics and UTMB. Dr. Goldman
