SugarHill
Studio in Houston is reviving the Big
Bopper's biggest hit, "Chantilly
Lace".
The project
is part of a SugarHill
Compilation CD, that features Texas and
International artists remaking hit records
recorded at SugarHill Recording Studios
(previously known as Gold Star Studios).
The song is being re-done by
Houstonian rocker Herschel Berry, and
is engineered by SugarHill's Staff Engineer John
Griffin. SugarHill's Chief
Engineer Andy Bradley will be
co-producing along with Berry.
Bradley explained that the remake has
more of a "rock song spin"
however "making sure it maintains
the original's fun spirit"
SugarHill's original founder Bill
Quinn recorded "Chantilly
Lace" at SugarHill in June
1958. Originally called "That's
what I like", it was released as a
B-side for another song. While the A-side
got some airplay, the "Chantilly
Lace" B-side eventually took
off and became an instant success. It
was one of the most played songs of 1958 and
more recently, it received a 3 million
Airplay Award from BMI.
The SugarHill Compilation CD proceeds
will be donated to the Musicians
Benevolent Society; a non- profit
organization that provides temporary,
emergency financial assistance to musicians
in need.
