Down
in the Gutters
and On the Sidewalks Program
Kicks Off April 2, 2005
On
April 2, 2005, the City of Galveston will
officially kick off the “Down in the
Gutters and On
the
Sidewalks” program at the LA Morgan
Renaissance Zone.
In
cooperation with Galveston County and the
City of Galveston, the purpose of this
program is
to
provide for safe sidewalks and clean
gutters. Supervised County volunteers will
be cleaning
from
the sidewalk to the gutters in the L.A.
Morgan Renaissance Zone Area.
Trustees
from the Sheriff’s Department will assist
with this process in the area surrounding
the
LA
Morgan School, which is one of the larger
flood zones in the city. By scraping
gutters, this
will
enhance the city’s drainage issue in the
area, preventing students and teachers from
walking
in
water on their way to/from school.
The
city is providing equipment, trucks, and
staff time. The County is providing meals
for the
Sheriff’s
trustees to do the work. The partnership was
facilitated between the city’s Families,
Children
and Youth Board and the Galveston County
Judge, Jim Yarbrough.
Finally,
this program supports the “Don’t Even
Think About It…Give Trash the Boot!”
campaign,
which resulted in more than 200 tons of
trash being removed from city streets in two
weekends
during March.
