LAKEWOOD MEMBERS WIN SPRING
REGATTA DEBUT CLASSES

For Lakewood Yacht Club’s annual Spring Regatta held on Mar. 19-20, two new classes of racing boats debuted on Galveston Bay and both were won by Lakewood racers.

Winning first place in  the Classic Class was Ashley Walker on his “Good News”, an Alberg 37.  To qualify for the Classic Class, the boat had to be designed prior to 1980 and have dacron sails without a spinnaker.  The second and new racing class introduced at the Spring Regatta was the premier J-109 class, a new one design boat.  Coming in second place with five competitors was new Lakewood member Al Goethe on “Hamburg”.

Race Committee Chairman John Barnett related that the five races held over the weekend experienced good wind and racers enjoyed a square course.   “We were very pleased with the 41 boat turnout,” related Barnett.   The largest fleet was the PHRF non-spinnaker distance one with eight competing boats.

Other first place Lakewood winners were Steve Hammerman on “Hammertime”, a J-80; Bill Zartler on “Solaris”, a J-105;  and Tom Sutton in the Level 70’s, on “Leading Edge”, a J-35.
