Violin
Soloist to Perform in May 15 Galveston
Symphony Finale
Violinist
Barbara Shook-Cleghorn will perform Max
Bruch’s Scottish
Fantasy Op. 46 with the Galveston
Symphony Orchestra in concert at 7 p.m.,
Sunday, May 15 at the Grand 1894 Opera
House, 2020 Postoffice St.
The
GSO presents the acclaimed soloist, a former
member of the Houston Symphony Orchestra for
31 years, as the finale of its silver 25th
anniversary season. The symphony is under
the baton of conductor and musical director
Richard Pickar, former principal clarinetist
with the Houston Symphony.
The
program also includes Rossini’s famous Barber
of Seville Overture
and concludes with the signature
classical-meets-romantic era work by German
composer Johannes Brahms, his sweeping Symphony No. 2 in D.
Shook-Cleghorn
began violin studies at age 3, sharing
lessons with her mother, Gladys, in Boise,
Idaho, and appeared as a soloist at age 12
with the College of Idaho orchestra. Among
her teachers and mentors are Naoum Blinder
in San Francisco (Isaac Stern’s teacher)
and Fredell Lack Eichorn in Houston. She has
been a member of the first violin section in
six symphony orchestras around the country,
including the GSO. Critics have mentioned
her “poise and style with the
instrument,” and that her “technical
difficulties were met securely and
confidently … with a handsome, throaty
tone.”
Barbara
resides in Pearland with husband Timothy, a
NASA astrophysicist, and three cats.
