CenterPoint
Energy provides important
summer electric safety tips
While
working outside on yards or playing in the
pool this summer, there are some electric
safety tips that you need to know about.
First, stay
away from low-hanging power lines, downed
lines and damaged poles! If you see any
problems, report them immediately to
CenterPoint Energy at 1-800-332-7143 or
(713) 207-2222.
Here
are some more tips that can ensure a safe
summer:
Work safely outside
- Wear
proper clothing when using electrical
appliances
- Don't
use electric equipment in wet areas
- Don't
put up antennas where they can touch or
fall across power lines
- Check
for power lines running through or near
trees before trimming branches
- Always
use a Ground
Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) protected
outlet or cord
Electrical
safety around pools
Pool users can be seriously injured or even
killed if local safety codes and standards
regarding overhead underground power lines
around swimming pools are not followed.
Locating pools away from power lines is
safer for everyone. Here are some additional
rules to follow while around a pool:
- Check
overhead for power lines before any pool
maintenance
- When
using a pool skimmer always maintain a
minimum of 10 foot of clearance from any
part of the skimmer to the power line
- Maintain
proper clearances to overhead power
lines from diving boards, decks,
platforms, slides or observation areas
- For
lighting and electrical receptacles
make sure that GFCI’s are
installed and operating correctly
- Except
for specially designed lighting
fixtures, no electrical equipment such
as radios, work lights, and extension
cords should be near any pool
- If
at any time shocks or tingling
sensations are felt, exit the pool
immediately and have it checked by a
qualified electrician
