DIALOGUE 5:30-7 P.M. - LEVIN HALL SOUTH
Daniel E. Hall, MD,
MDiv, and Farr Curlin, MD, will be the speakers
for our March 30 Spirituality in Healthcare
Dialogue 5:30 p.m.- 7 p.m. at UTMB Levin
Hall. The Dialogue is open free to the public.
Free parking is available directly across the
street on 11th and Market.
An Episcopal Priest, The Rev. Dr. Hall is an
assistant rector at Church of the Holy Family in
Chapel Hill, NC. and a John Templeton Fellow in
Religion and medicine University. Dr. Hall's
research focuses on epistemology, moral
philosophy, religious measurement, and the ways in
which medical decision-making is influenced by
religious and secular worldviews.
Dr. Curlin is an instructor in the Section of
General Internal Medicine and the MacLean Center
for Clinical Medical Ethics at The University of
Chicago, where he recently completed the Robert
Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program and a
fellowship in clinical ethics. His research and
teaching center on the intersection of religion
and medicine, particularly the ways that
physicians' religious commitments shape their
clinical engagements.
Although religious coercion is never warranted,
Curlin and Hall argue that neutrality regarding
religion is neither possible nor desirable. They
suggest rather that the challenging interface
between religion and medicine requires wisdom and
character formed by deep self-awareness of the
various commitments, (religious and otherwise)
that shape decisions regarding medical practice,
policy, and professional conduct.
The purpose of
the Spirituality in Healthcare Dialogues is to
encourage the healthcare community to recognize
that spirituality is intrinsic to the human
condition and to provide a forum for professional
collaboration to advance the understanding of
spirituality and health, as well as encouraging
and guiding healthcare practitioners in responding
to the spiritual needs of patients.
The Dialogues have been a part of our ministry
since 1995. During that time we have presented two
to four speakers yearly. All the Dialogues are
open free to the public.
