Why
is it that adults resort to elementary school behavior when an
election comes?
Here in Friendswood, when an
“establishment” candidate is running opposite what they
consider to be an “outsider” candidate, a pattern of sign
stealing, name-calling and rumor mongering surfaces. I find it
absolutely incredulous that this behavior exists, and to state
otherwise is denying the reality of it.
First, removing and/or moving
a campaign sign that has been placed on private or public
property is a crime and can be charged as such. Secondly,
name-calling and rumor mongering is the behavior of a coward.
If you disagree with your opponent, so be it. Have the decency
and courage to state your case to the person with whom you
disagree. To do otherwise is the mark of a coward. You do not
have to resort to spreading rumors and/or threats. Be an
honorable person and own what you say. Otherwise, don’t say
it.
That modus operandi appears
to be the platform of the Friendswood “establishment” when
any election is held, whether it be for City Council, Mayor,
the Friendswood School Board or any elected position. The “establishment”
will put the opposing candidate in their sights and aim high.
Friendswood is not a small community anymore. There are more
than twice as many non-native Friendswood citizens as
natives.
The “establishment”
should remember that.
