Landry's Restaurants, Inc. announced today that it will purchase the Golden Nugget Casino in downtown Las Vegas from Poster Financial Group, Inc. for $140 million in cash and the assumption of $155 million of senior secured notes, as well as "certain working capital liabilities". "Landry's is thrilled to add casino gaming to a varied and diverse collection of entertainment offerings that already includes casual and fine dining, hospitality and aquarium properties," said Tilman Fertitta, chair, president and CEO of Landry's. "The Golden Nugget is the premier property in downtown Las Vegas, has outstanding brand recognition across the country, and is a perfect fit for us." The Golden Nugget occupies over eight acres with approximately 40,000 square feet of gaming area. The property also features three towers containing 1,907 guest rooms, including "some of the most dynamic suites in town". "Landry's operating skill and steady leadership will help boost the Golden Nugget to a new level of performance and satisfaction," Fertitta said. Clear Lake Shores City Council Clear Lake Shores City Council on Tuesday approved a contract with the Texas General Land Office for development of Jarboe Park, a $106,000 project. "It will be used for trails and wetlands restoration," said Mayor Katherine McIntyre. "It's good news." The property, approximately two and one-half acres, was originally zoned for apartments, but was purchased over the years by the Clear Lake Shores Economic Development Corporation with sales tax revenue. The city council voted to continue with Olson and Olson for the city's legal services. All other agenda items were approved. Mayor Bill White took a walk in the Downtown Houston Tunnel with a group of other Houstonians this morning to launch the Get Moving Houston campaign's 21 Days of Fitness. The event was one of several scheduled over the coming year designed to encourage Houstonians to become more physically fit and to become educated about the importance of exercise and good nutrition. "The Walk in the Downtown Tunnel is just one of many fun events to draw attention to the need for all of us to make exercise a part of our lives," White said. "Through this event, and many more to follow, we want to encourage Houstonians to help us to get off the Fattest Cities List, and more importantly, work-out as a community. It is important to improving our quality of life." The campaign was designed by Mayor's Wellness Council Chair Herb Lipsman. "Studies show if you can stay dedicated to a plan for 21 days, then your chances of making exercise a regular part of your life increase greatly," Lipsman said. Upcoming events on the Get Moving Houston calendar include HEB/Bayou City Classic 10K, Walk, Run, Roll Saturday, March 12, at 8:00 a.m.; the Tour de Houston 20 mile and 40 mile Bicycle Fun Ride, Saturday, March 19th, 2005, at 7:00a.m.; and the Health and Wellness Town Hall for People with Disabilities, Wednesday, April 13, 2005, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at 1475 West Gray. Jackson, an adjunct theatre professor at San Jac South, is directing her own plays. “My teaching methodology is a very in your face, hands-on approach, that extends beyond the theory and conceptual ideas that we discuss in class,” Jackson said. “I am ecstatic to have San Jac students participating in my productions because they come from diverse majors, like engineering, nursing, pharmacy, and others, which makes their experience even more out of the box.” Students participating in the readings are Charlotte Barnhart of Webster; Monica Arauyo, Hollis Westerlage, Sammy Audi, Imad Taha, Natalie Tucker and Gisela Garza of Houston; Elona Zanaj and Gloria Olivares of Friendswood; Rickey Gonzalez and Holly Marshall of Pasadena; and Andy Nguyen of Pearland. The event is free and open to the public. For more information call (281) 253-3939 or email kai.franklin@sjcd.edu.
