Pasadena City Council

Pasadena City Council on Tuesday voted 8-1, with Jack Douglass opposed, to approve three motions related to the Strawberry Road Extension Project, including the appropriation of an additional $325,000 for the acquisition of property for the project.

"Here we go again on the road to nowhere," said Douglass, who has been opposed the project from the beginning. Listen  Download

Douglass quoted from a newspaper article regarding funding problems in the Texas Department of Transportation.  "It looks like we will end up funding this whole project out of the city budget."

The city council voted final approval of a baseball/softball facility license agreement with the Raptor Baseball Team, but on a motion by Douglass reduced the fee from $900 to $600.

The city council voted to accept a $600 donation from the Pasadena Downtown Lions Club for the Pasadena Fire Marshal's Juvenile Fire Starter Intervention Program.

The city council voted to accept a donation of ceramics valued at $300 for the Parks and Recreation Department's youth and adult ceramics classes from Marguerite New.

The city council voted to accept a $29.95 donation from Cynthia Saucier for the purchase of books for the Central Library collection in memory of Michele Saucier Bush.

Clear Creek Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Sandra Mossman, CCISD Director of Planning Fred Niccum and School Board Vice President Robert Davee appeared before the city council seeking to expedite the permit process for a new elementary school at Kirby Road and NASA Parkway in Pasadena.  Listen  Download

"Clear Creek ISD is experiencing unprecedented growth," Mossman said.  "A lot of that growth is actually occurring in the area near the particular part of our district that lies in the city of Pasadena."

The Board of Trustees of Galveston Independent School District in a special meeting Wednesday evening unanimously approved a one-year lease on a commercial facility on 625 53rd Street to be used for storage and office space.

"We have no space to house anything," said Superintendent Lynn Hale, stressing the need for the space, especially during the summer months.  "We've looked this island over and this is the best space we found."

The school board voted to apply for a federal grant to continue the GISD Adolescent Family Life Demonstration Project.

"We are real excited about the possibility of getting a grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to help us with our pregnant mothers in high school," Hale said in an interview with Anita Donatto.  Listen  Download

The school board approved a resolution supporting Region IV Education Service Center as a Pilot Regional Education Service Center.

The school board scheduled a special meeting on April 4 at 5:30 p.m. to discuss stadium options, to review the current budget status and to receive the 2005/06 Budget.

All other agenda items were approved unanimously.

Galveston Chamber of Commerce

The 13th Annual Galveston Chamber of Commerce Business Expo, Imagine an Island to Live, Work and Play, will be held on Thursday, May 12, 2005, from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Galveston Island Convention Center at the San Luis.

"Galveston is experiencing a strong boom in business on the island, so there’s never been a better time to participate in the Chamber’s Business Expo," said Christy Benson, director of special projects for the chamber, in a letter to members.

"This year exhibitors will be able to showcase and sell their products and services in the new Galveston Island Convention Center at the San Luis Resort," Benson said.  "Our theme, Imagine an Island to Live, Work and Play, will allow us to place vendors into areas of the exhibit hall that are themed for their business.  The 'Live' section would be for real estate, apartments and condominiums for example. The 'Work' section would have businesses that deal with work (i.e. employment opportunities, business machine sales, print shops, banks). And the 'Play' section would encompass the area attractions, hotels, restaurants, fishing, boating etc."

Business Expo exhibit space for chamber members is $250 per booth.  It is $350 for non-members.
