Pasadena City Council on Tuesday voted 8-1, with Jack Douglass opposed, to approve three motions related to the Strawberry Road Extension Project, including the appropriation of an additional $325,000 for the acquisition of property for the project. "Here we go again on the road to nowhere," said Douglass, who has been opposed the project from the beginning. Listen Download Douglass quoted from a newspaper article regarding funding problems in the Texas Department of Transportation. "It looks like we will end up funding this whole project out of the city budget." The city council voted final approval of a baseball/softball facility license agreement with the Raptor Baseball Team, but on a motion by Douglass reduced the fee from $900 to $600. The city council voted to accept a $600 donation from the Pasadena Downtown Lions Club for the Pasadena Fire Marshal's Juvenile Fire Starter Intervention Program. The city council voted to accept a donation of ceramics valued at $300 for the Parks and Recreation Department's youth and adult ceramics classes from Marguerite New. The city council voted to accept a $29.95 donation from Cynthia Saucier for the purchase of books for the Central Library collection in memory of Michele Saucier Bush. Clear Creek Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Sandra Mossman, CCISD Director of Planning Fred Niccum and School Board Vice President Robert Davee appeared before the city council seeking to expedite the permit process for a new elementary school at Kirby Road and NASA Parkway in Pasadena. Listen Download "Clear Creek ISD is experiencing unprecedented growth," Mossman said. "A lot of that growth is actually occurring in the area near the particular part of our district that lies in the city of Pasadena." Galveston Independent School District The Board of Trustees of Galveston Independent School District in a special meeting Wednesday evening unanimously approved a one-year lease on a commercial facility on 625 53rd Street to be used for storage and office space. "We have no space to house anything," said Superintendent Lynn Hale, stressing the need for the space, especially during the summer months. "We've looked this island over and this is the best space we found." The school board voted to apply for a federal grant to continue the GISD Adolescent Family Life Demonstration Project. "We are real excited about the possibility of getting a grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to help us with our pregnant mothers in high school," Hale said in an interview with Anita Donatto. Listen Download The school board approved a resolution supporting Region IV Education Service Center as a Pilot Regional Education Service Center. The school board scheduled a special meeting on April 4 at 5:30 p.m. to discuss stadium options, to review the current budget status and to receive the 2005/06 Budget. All other agenda items were approved unanimously. United States Representative Ted Poe will host a series of community information meetings throughout the Second Congressional District on Saturday. "Poe will discuss a summary of the 109th Congress, legislation he has introduced to protect children, his founding of the Congressional Victims’ Rights Caucus, and other issues of interest to the district," said a news release. "Congressman Poe and caseworkers from his staff will be available to answer questions and open any casework files necessary." Poe will begin at the 1960 Area Ponderosa Volunteer Fire Station at 17061 Rolling Creek Drive in Houston from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. He will visit the Humble Civic Center at 8233 Will Clayton Parkway between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. He will visit the Liberty County Courthouse between 12:30 and 1:30. He will visit the Port Arthur Chamber of Commerce offices in the Tower Building Community Room at 4749 Twin City Highway between 3:30 and 4:30. Finally, Poe will visit the Lamar Institute of Technology Multi-purpose Center at 802 East Lavaca in Beaumont between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. The public is invited to the meetings. The 13th Annual Galveston Chamber of Commerce Business Expo, Imagine an Island to Live, Work and Play, will be held on Thursday, May 12, 2005, from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Galveston Island Convention Center at the San Luis. "Galveston is experiencing a strong boom in business on the island, so there’s never been a better time to participate in the Chamber’s Business Expo," said Christy Benson, director of special projects for the chamber, in a letter to members. "This year exhibitors will be able to showcase and sell their products and services in the new Galveston Island Convention Center at the San Luis Resort," Benson said. "Our theme, Imagine an Island to Live, Work and Play, will allow us to place vendors into areas of the exhibit hall that are themed for their business. The 'Live' section would be for real estate, apartments and condominiums for example. The 'Work' section would have businesses that deal with work (i.e. employment opportunities, business machine sales, print shops, banks). And the 'Play' section would encompass the area attractions, hotels, restaurants, fishing, boating etc." Business Expo exhibit space for chamber members is $250 per booth. It is $350 for non-members. University of Texas Medical Branch Camp RAD (Reactive Airway Disease) is registering participants for the 2005 spring camp at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. Camp RAD is a specialty day camp for children between the ages of 7 and 12 with moderate to severe asthma. Participants learn how to manage their symptoms. The theme this year is The Magical, Radical Camp RAD. Pediatric asthma health professionals from UTBM staff Camp RAD. "A variety of fun activities are planned each day, including swimming, soccer, and arts and crafts," said a news release. In addition to learning about asthma and having fun, children benefit from socializing with other children who have asthma. Parents of children who have attended Camp RAD feel that their children have a more positive attitude toward taking medication and monitoring their symptoms because of the camp experience." Camp RAD 2005 will be held from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, June 6, through Friday, June 10, at the UTMB Alumni Field House, 215 Holiday Drive, Galveston. Campers are responsible for their own transportation. The cost for the week is $75, plus a registration fee. The fee is $10 before May 10 and $25 after. Scholarships are available. Campers and their parents or guardians are required to attend orientation on one of two weekends. Sessions are from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 14, and Saturday, May 29, in the UTMB School of Allied Health lobby, 1100 Mechanic Street. San Jacinto College software specialist Ron Wood will manage an online system for the annual Texas Library Association conference in Austin this April. Wood will oversee the TLA placement system, an online database of job opportunities in the Southwest. Users can locate jobs through the database and arrange job interviews at the conference. The system was created by Wood for the conference when it was held in Houston, replacing the paper-based system. He has managed the system for the past three years. The TLA holds the nation’s second largest library and information conference, expecting 7,000 attendees this year.
