The Houston Astros announced today that Galveston native Brandon Backe has agreed to a new one-year contract for $350,000. Backe, a Ball High School graduate, who also played for the Galveston College Whitecaps, was 5-3 with a 4.30 earned run average in 33 games for Houston in 2004. He was 1-0 with a 2.89 ERA in three postseason starts, including game 5 of the National League Championship Series against St. Louis, when he allowed one hit over eight shutout innings.
