A day sail on the 1877 Tall Ship “Elissa” on Sunday was cancelled due to dangerously high winds.

“The situation is such that if anything were to not work properly, we could get into serious trouble and perhaps damage the ship or hurt some people,” said Captain Steve Cobb. Listen  Download

Guests enjoyed a tour on board the ship, though many said they were disappointed to miss the day sail.

Cobb explained the history of the “Elissa,” which was built by Henry Fowler Watt and was sold the Galveston Historical Foundation in 1975.

Crew member Kennon Smith described the crew and some of its responsibilities. Smith has volunteered on the “Elissa” since 2000 and has participated in four sailing trips. Listen  Download

The “Elissa” is docked at the Texas Seaport Museum in Galveston and is maintained by the Galveston Historical Society.
