Galveston County Commissioners Court voted 5-0 to terminate the contract with Allstar Sportsplex, LLC for operation of Veterans Sports Complex in Jack Brooks Park.

Parks and Senior Services Director Dennis Harris said that Allstar has not been in compliance with the contract.  However, he expressed concern about finding an operator who can make a profit with the park.

"What we are really looking for is somebody to provide a quality service at that sportsplex," Harris said.

"We really ought to close it down or hire a guy to run it," said Commissioner Eddie Janek.  "It's been a Jonah as far as I'm concerned."

"It gets good use," said County Judge Jim Yarbrough.  "But it's hard for the private sector to go in and make any money on these things."

Janek said that he was not serious about closing the facility.

"Has the sports complex in League City hurt us any?" Janek asked.

"That is one of the excuses they (Allstar) have used," Harris responded.  "But, I don't think that that's the case."

Yarbrough asked Harris to develop a cost estimate of what it would take for the county to manage the facility, rather than to contract with a private company.
