Ambrose Joseph Medina

Ambrose Joseph MedinaAmbrose Joseph Medina, age 81, died May 12, 2005 .  Ambrose, also known as “Rocky” and “Ace” by his family and friends, was born in Aguascalientes , Mexico , on February 9, 1924 .  

As an infant, Ambrose and his family moved from Mexico to Galveston , Texas .  Upon graduating from Kirwin High School in Galveston , Ambrose attended The University of Texas at Austin on a baseball scholarship.  He left the university to serve his country by joining the U.S. Navy as an aerographer’s mate.  He spent time in Khabarovsk , Russia , monitoring weather patterns to assess optimal flying combat conditions.  Once discharged from the Navy, Ambrose played professional baseball in the St. Louis Browns organization, now the Baltimore Orioles, as a pitcher.  After his baseball career, he worked as a traffic manager for States Marine Lines, and later with H. L. Ziegler as a Vice President.  He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus and The Propeller Club.  Some passions of Ambrose were coaching youth baseball on the Island , watching the Houston Astros, as well as taking care of his yard and garden.  

Ambrose is preceded in death by his father, Josefat Medina, mother, Mercedes Montoya Medina, sister, Aurora Dominguez, and brother, Josefat Medina, Jr.  He is survived by his wife of fifty-six years, Catherine J. Medina, his children, C. Diane Kendall and her husband Gerard, Joseph A. Medina and his girlfriend Reba Stevens, and Susan D. Medina and her husband Roland Alaniz, his sisters, Mary Esther Sandoval and Mary Olphelia Sievert, his brother, Dr. David A. Medina and his wife Christine, his grandchildren Heather, Gerard and Heath Kendall and his wife Carolyn, Jennifer and Kay Medina, and Brian Blackwood and his wife Sarah, and his great-grandchildren Brian II, William, and Tyler Blackwood. 

Pallbearers will be Joseph Medina, Dr. David Medina, Gerard Kendall, Roland Alaniz, Gerard Kendall II, Heath Kendall, and Brian Blackwood.  Honorary pallbearers will be Brad Blackwood, Ray Bockelman, Fred Gorzell, Robert Hubbell, Robert Hubbell, Jr., and Walter Hunter.  

Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm on Friday, May 13, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home in Galveston , Texas , with a rosary at 7:00 pm .  Funeral services will take place at 12:00 pm on Saturday, May 14, at Sacred Heart Church in Galveston , Texas .  Burial will follow at Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery in Dickinson , Texas .  

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sacred Heart Church Building Fund or St. Mary’s Basilica Bell Tower Fund in Galveston .  We would like to express our deepest appreciation for the kindness and compassion of Dr. Paul Mathew, Jane Williams, Tammy Collins, The Palliative Care Unit of M.D. Anderson, and A-Med Community Hospice.  

We will miss you terribly, Rocky, but we all feel great joy knowing you are in God’s loving arms.
