Truth and Facts about Tommie Cones
by Enrique de Leon
April 21, 2006

Recently Mr. Cones sent out mailers in an attempt to confuse voters by identifying himself as conservative and honest.  I would like to set the record straight by pointing out a few facts and truths about Mr. Cones.  First, in a letter written on April 4, 2006, announcing his candidacy, Mr. Cones states, “our tax rate has gone down for the past 4 years and I voted for each decrease.”  Fact is that in 2002, Mr. Cones voted against a city tax decrease.  The rate at that time was .6525 per 100 and the proposed tax was .6500 per 100.  Despite Mr. Cones voting against the motion (4 to 3), the tax decrease passed.

In this same letter, Mr. Cones reports that he supports commercial development such as Lowe’s.  However, during a council meeting on April 11, 2006, Mr. Cones voted against an agreement between the city and New Quest/Lowe’s; the motion passed 4 to 3.

In regards to Mr. Cones being a conservative, in 2002 Mr. Cones was the sole supporter of a $39,000.00 Police Department management study.  The study had no purpose and despite being told by a fellow council member that “we don’t even know if this study is justified, necessary” and that the study was just a “liberal, wasteful spending” study, Mr. Cones voted in favor; the motion failed 6 to 1.  Additionally, Mr. Cones has been very supportive of Big League Dreams (BLD).  This project will cost League City residents millions in the years to come.  Mr. Cones continued to throw money into the BLD project by voting to spend $25,000.00 for the 2005 BLD Grand Opening.  Lastly, since being elected to city council, Mr. Cones has spent over $13,000.00 traveling out of state at the expense of tax payers.

In conclusion, if you look at the above facts, how honest and conservative has Mr. Cones been?  If re-elected, will he be accountable to home developers or residents?  His own financial records indicate that he has received thousands in campaign contributions from home developers and real estate companies.  His voting record favoring home developers will speak for itself.  As of my filing date, I have said that I will not receive a single contribution, before or after the election, from any developer.  I run a grassroots campaign and as a showing of my integrity and in support of open government, I will provide my campaign financial records to anyone at anytime; I challenge Mr. Cones to do the same.

Please remember, this election is about the future of OUR city!
