Special Heavy Rainfall Report

Issued by the Jamaica Beach Weather Observatory
8:50 AM CDT Thursday, July 6, 2006

...Rainfall total for July now almost 10 inches at Jamaica Beach...

A steady surge of highly moist and unstable tropical air from the Gulf of Mexico
interacting with various mesoscale and synoptic-scale weather disturbances at the
surface and in the upper atmosphere has produced a deluge of rainfall since the
beginning of the month on Galveston Island.  Although only 5¼ days old, the rainfall
total for July is now almost 10 inches at the Jamaica Beach Weather Observatory.

At one point this morning, rain was falling so heavily in Jamaica Beach that 0.48 of
an inch of rain fell in a 5-minute period...1.12 inches fell in a 15-minute period...and
2.00 inches fell in a 1-hour period.

The following 24-hour daily rainfall totals were recorded at the Jamaica Beach
Weather Observatory each day from Midnight to Midnight CST (1AM to 1AM CDT):

July 1................... 2.06"
July 2................... 0.12"
July 3................... 3.75"
July 4................... 1.24"
July 5................... 0.69"
July 6 (thru 6AM CST).... 2.04"
------------------------------
STORM TOTAL SO FAR....... 9.90"

The record monthly total for the month of July at Jamaica Beach is 10.38 inches
which occurred in July 2003.  With more heavy rain expected, it is very possible
that a new monthly record for the month of July will be set later today.  The record
monthly total for any month at Jamaica Beach is 18.23 inches which occurred in
September 2002...a year that also saw the greatest annual total ever recorded at
this station when an incredible 80.25 inches of rain fell that year.  Both of these
dubious records appear to be in no danger of being broken anytime soon.

Although the eastern half of Galveston Island has also seen its share of heavy
rainfall during the past several days, substantially less rain has fallen at Scholes
International Airport in Galveston than at Jamaica Beach. The comparison of day
to day rainfall totals at these two official National Weather Service reporting
stations illustrate quite well the wide variance in precipitation distribution that
often occurs on this 32-mile long barrier island along the Texas Gulf Coast.

The following 24-hour daily rainfall totals were recorded at Scholes International
Airport in Galveston each day from Midnight to Midnight CST (1AM to 1AM CDT):

July 1................... 0.44"
July 2................... 0.03"
July 3................... 2.86"
July 4................... 0.64"
July 5................... 1.80"
July 6 (thru 6AM CST).... 0.31"
------------------------------
STORM TOTAL SO FAR....... 6.08"

Further updates on this continuing heavy rainfall event will be issued as necessary.
