6 a.m. after Tuesday's votes
had finally been counted.

Galveston County officials and employees, as well as many in the general public, spent a very long day in the process of voting and tabulation of the vote in the November 7 General Election.

There were some problems with wrong ballots at some voting precincts and too few ballots at others; and after the polls closed, major delays plagued the tabulation process.

Media representatives, who were provided excellent facilities and broadband connections in the Galveston County Justice Center Law Library had been told that there should be no problem with release of early vote totals.  However, no numbers were provided before 9 p.m.  Public Information Officer John Simsen explained the delay.  Listen Download

Later, Simsen said he had been assured that the early vote would be available at 9:15.  Listen Download

The first tabulations were provided shortly after 9, but the tally was not finished until 4:49 a.m., and still were not complete because Precinct 102 in Gilchrist on the Bolivar Peninsula needed to be re-counted.  Shortly before 6 a.m., Simsen, who had been assigned to serve as a liaison between the media and the county clerk's office, said that nothing else would be provided at that time; and declined to explain in a recorded interview.  Later in the day County Clerk Mary Ann Daigle, who was reelected on Tuesday, explained that there were questions about whether those ballots had been previously scanned or not, thus a recount was ordered.
