Mr. Robert James DeVries passed from this life Friday, December 29, 2006, in Nassau Bay.

Born October 2, 1942 in Galveston, TX, Mr. DeVries had been a resident of Hitchcock for 58 years. A member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, VFW Post 5400, Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie #3789 and the Navy Fleet Retired Association. He had retired from the US Navy in 1982 after 22 years and later retired in 2003 as a Systems Operator Supervisor for Texas New Mexico after 20 years of service.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of over 11 years, Marika (Somarakis) DeVries; father, Berthus H. DeVries, Sr.

Survivors include his daughter, Laronda DeVries of San Antonio; stepson, Charlie Johnson and wife, Tracy of League City; grandchildren, Brandi K. Barker, Alec Johnson; mother, Victoria DeVries of Hitchcock; brothers, B. Henry DeVries, Jr. and wife, Barbara of Hitchcock, Charles DeVries of Texas City, Ronnie DeVries and wife, Annette of Santa Fe; sisters, Mary Pritchard and husband, Bill of La Marque and Cathy Frantz of Hitchcock.

Funeral services will be conducted 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 3, 2007, in the chapel of Hayes Funeral Home with Reverend John Kappe officiating. Interment will follow at Grace Memorial Park Cemetery.

Casketbearers will be Carlos Craven, Charles DeVries, Dwayne DeVries, Charlie Johnson, Bill Pritchard and Glen Rehm. Honorary bearers will be his nephews and great-nephews.
