Galveston ISD Trustee Election

Kelly Chambers has announced her candidacy for GISD Board of Trustees in District 1-A.  The community is invited to meet the candidate on Thursday, October 12, 2006 from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. at Sunflower Bakery & Café, 512 14th Street.

Chambers, a mother of three, has had children in GISD for seven years; currently one child at Rosenberg Elementary, two at Austin Middle School.  Ms Chambers has been a full time Galveston resident with her husband and children since 1998.  Volunteer work within GISD includes:  Past President Rosenberg PTO; currently PTO treasurer.  She served on the GISD District Council, Citywide PTO, Attendance Zone & Facility Usage Committee, Gifted & Talented Parent Advisory Committee, & Rosenberg Site-Base Committee.  Ms Chambers worked with Galveston County Interfaith to help secure a $50,000 TEA E-Grant for Rosenberg for student after school enrichment, teacher training, & parent education & helped initiate Parent Achievement Academies at Rosenberg.

Ms Chambers has been a full-time homemaker & community volunteer for eight years.  Current volunteer activities include:  Member, The Grand 1894 Opera House Board & Co-chair Grand Kids Fest Committee; member, Friends of Austin Middle School Board; member, Moody Methodist Library Board.  Chambers previously worked in corporate banking marketing for eleven years.

Educated in Fort Worth public schools, Ms Chambers also attained a B.A. from Southwestern Univ., M.B.A. from Tulane Univ., and  J.D. from DePaul Univ.

As a school board trustee Ms Chambers states that she would work to ensure that the district:

- First evaluates every decision based on its impact on student learning.

- Encourages and enhances the district’s most valuable resource -- teachers and staff.

- Restores the public’s trust in fiscal responsibility:  audits the bond issue; properly maintains all school facilities.

- Equitably distributes district resources and educational opportunities across all schools.

- Fosters full and active participation by parents in their children’s education and the school system.
