Why Not Lower The Tax Rate? by Buzz Elton

It would
be helpful to understand the
relationship of the ever increasing cost
of school taxes given a declining
enrollment and Galveston now facing the
probability of being a tax rich
district. Should we consider reducing
the Galveston school tax burden on local
tax payers and potentially eliminate the
surplus that the Robin Hood plan calls
for redistributing to other communities?
School
taxes represent the bulk of the property
taxes all property owners pay. Since the
need for school tax funding should be
significantly reduced by closing two
schools and serving 675 fewer students,
is there a reason why the school tax
rates can't be reduced significantly
enough so we don't have to send
$7,000,000 of Galveston school tax to
Clear Lake. why not lower the tax rate
to serve only our community?
