There are many
diverse activities initiated in American
communities during Domestic Violence
Awareness Month.
To commemorate
this important event and to raise awareness
within our community, the Resource and
Crisis Center of Galveston County (RCC) has
organized several displays. Look for
the following: Our banner display
on Broadway; Clothesline Project displayed
at The College of the Mainland, an exhibit
displaying 40 shirts made by survivors of
domestic violence and sexual assault; Matrix
in League City displaying electronic message
regarding Domestic Violence Awareness Month;
posters and literature which were
distributed to local police department
communication officers to encourage their
vigilance in responding to domestic violence
calls; and editorials regarding Domestic
Violence in the African American Community
and at large. In addition,
proclamations will be read at local city
council meetings declaring October as
Domestic Violence Awareness Month in 13
municipalities. I encourage you to
find these displays and discuss them with
others.
Over the
years, a purple ribbon has become the
visible gesture of support for victims and
survivors of domestic violence. We are
currently running our Purple Ribbon
Campaign; ribbons have been distributed to
college campuses, district attorney's
office, courts and community service
locations. You can pick up your purple
ribbon at 2202 Avenue L in Galveston.
Wear your purple ribbon throughout the month
of October to raise awareness and open up a
dialogue about Domestic Violence.
