On January 27,2007, Ethel Marie Savoie
Mouton passed away at her home in
Hitchcock,
TX surrounded by her loving
family. Ethel was born June 4, 1911, in
Grand Teau, LA, the daughter of Julia
Bourque and James Octave Savoie.
Ethel grew up in
Louisiana and later moved to
Port Arthur,
TX with her family. While in
Port Arthur, she
was reunited with a childhood friend,
Ernest J. Mouton. On November 20, 1928,
she married that friend at St. Mary's
Church. They later moved to
Galveston,
TX. While Ernest worked for the
Lighthouse Service and then Coast Guard,
Ethel worked for the Rex Laundry and
later for the Fort Crockett Laundry in
Galveston.
In 1951, they bought a house and
property in Port Bolivar, TX. There they
had a little farm, where Ethel sold
fresh eggs with her daughters and she
grew the most beautiful roses in the
area. While there, Ethel worked at the
Port
Bolivar
Elementary School as the
Cafeteria Supervisor. In the early
70's, they retired to
Hitchcock,
TX. Where they had a garden and
fruit trees, and Ethel did a lot of
canning.
Throughout their lives their doors were
always open to family and friends,
whether it was a helping hand or a big
helping of food, they were the happiest
when the house was full of loved ones.
Ethel and Ernest were members of the St.
Mary's Catholic Church,
Galveston,
TX; Port Bolivar Catholic
Church; and finally at the Our Lady of
Lourdes Catholic Church,
Hitchcock,
Texas.
Ethel and Ernest celebrated their 70th
wedding anniversary in 1998. Ernest
preceded her in death on June 6, 2000.
Besides her loving husband, one brother-
Ewell Savoie and five sisters: Marie
Roussell-Savoie, Effiie Savoie-Shrouder,
Genevieve Savoie-Landry, Myrtle
Savoie-Bunde, and Frankie Savoie-Cardenas
preceded her in death. All of her
father's first wife�s children have
preceded her in death: Marie Lina Savoie,
Bertha Savoie-Mouton-Totten, Marie Elbie
Savoie, Joseph Venden Savoie, Marie
Sylvia Savoie-Mouton, and Dewey 'Pete'
Savoie. She was also preceded by her
son-in-laws: Oscar C. Enge and James M.
Dailey, Sr.
She is survived by daughters: Marie
Beverly Enge of Hitchcock, TX; Betty Lou
Myers of Center, TX; Lois Ann McMillan
of Lawrence, KS; and Judy Marie Dailey
of Arlington, TX; brother Ashton Savoie
of Church Point, LA; 6 grandchildren,
Peggy Enge-Radford of Houston, TX; Carl
Enge of Hitchcock, TX; Pamela Myers-Richcreek
of Kemah, TX; Shawn McMillan of
Galveston, TX; Tammy Dailey-Hook of
Alvarado, TX; James Dailey of Black
Canyon City, AZ; 6 great-grandchildren;
1 great-great-grandson; two nephews who
greatly helped the family: Ted Wayne
Landry of Santa Fe, TX and Nathan Mouton
of LaMarque, TX; many other nieces,
nephews and friends, and a very close
family friend and spiritual support to
all of us, Sister Mary Anne Hollmann of
Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.
Visitation will be held from 5-8 on
Monday at Hayes Funeral Home, 10412
Highway 6,
Hitchcock,
TX, (409) 925-3501 with a Vigil
service at 7:00 p.m. conducted by Sister
Mary Anne Hollmann. A Mass will be
celebrated 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, January
30, 2007 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic
Church, 1014 Highway 6, Hitchcock, TX
with Reverend John Kappe as celebrant.
Afterwards, the graveside service will
be held at Galveston Memorial Park
Cemetery,
7301 Memorial Dr.,
Hitchcock,
TX.
Pallbearers are: Nathan Mouton, Fredrick
McMillan, Shawn McMillan, Francisco
Cruz, Josh Mitchell, and Jerry Myers.
