The world-renowned Bob Shannon, Jr. – Captain of the Quaker City String Band of the Philadelphia Mummers - will be Parade Grand Marshall for the 9th annual Krewe of Barkus and Meoux Mardi Gras Parade, this Sunday, February 18, at 1:00p.m. This event is sponsored by, and benefits exclusively the Galveston Island Humane Society. Check in and on-site registration will begin at 12 noon at the corner of 25th Street (Rosenberg) and Avenue M. The parade will travel north from 25th and Avenue M to Santa Fe Place. On site registration is $20.00 per entry and includes a T-Shirt. All entries must have proof of current rabies vaccination to participate and all animals walking must be on a leash no longer than six feet, with no retractable leashes allowed.
All pet entries and their owners are encouraged to dress in Mardi Gras costume. Judges will award ribbons to those “best-costumed” and winners will be asked to walk at the front of the parade just behind the carriage carrying the King. This year’s “King” is King Trump, owned by Jackie and Elizabeth Neff, who was crowned at this past year’s annual Paws Gala.
A special service will also be offered by local veterinarians to micro-chip (a permanent form of identification) pets during the on-site registration. For $30, owners can have their pet “chipped” as time permits prior to the parade.
