Zona Mae LovingsReflections of a Life

On October 14, 1926, Zona Mae Lovings, the second of three children was born in Galveston, Texas.  She accepted Christ at an early age.  Upon moving to La Marque, Texas, she united with the Greater Bell Zion Baptist Church where she served as a faithful member until failing health.

She was educated in the GalvestonIndependentSchool District.  She received a Bachelor of Science degree from Huston Tillotson in Austin, Texas and a Master of Education from Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas.  While at Huston Tillotson she pledged her love to Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.  Soror Lovings was a charter member of the La Marque Alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.  Zona united in holy matrimony to James C. Lovings on December 29, 1952. 
As an educator she was first employed by Burton ISD and later she devoted thirty-five years to the students of La Marque ISD.  Mrs. Lovings was a member of the La Marque Retired Teachers Association, Texas State Teacher Association and Classroom Teacher Association.  She was a Girl Scout leader for troop 427 for twenty-five years.

On Thursday, March 1, 2007, Zona Mae Lovings, departed this life at her residence to be with the Lord.  She is preceded in death by her parents, her sister and her brother.  Her loving memories will forever be cherished by her loving and devoted husband, James C. Lovings of fifty-four years, aunt, Fannie Smith, niece, Mary Ann (Esse) Evans-Sandles, brother-in-law, Raymond (Loraine) Lovings, godchildren, Regenia (William) Randall, Allastair Webb and a devoted friend, Nancy M. Webb, all of Texas City, Texas; brother-in-law, Ollie (Gloria) Lovings of Houston, Texas; sister-in-law, Maragaret Beal of Waco, Texas and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, other family members, and her church family.

Visitation will begin at 5PM on Tuesday, March 6th at the Greater Bell Zion Church, 5917 Carver in Texas City, with the family receiving friends from 7-8 PM for a wake service. A service celebrating her wonderful and dedicated life will be held on Wednesday, March 7, 2007, beginning at the Eleven o'clock hour at Greater Bell Zion BaptistChurch with Pastor Jerry B. Lee, Jr., officiating. She will be laid to rest in the Forest ParkEastCemetery in Webster, Texas under the direction of E. R. Johnson Family Mortuary.
