Austin Norman, Jr.

Austin Norman, Jr.Austin Norman, Jr., departed this life on Friday, April 13th at the Harborview Care Center in League City, TX after a long illness.

Austin was born in Galveston on August 18, 1929, to Austin Norman, Sr. and Rose Hall Norman and graduated from Central High School. After graduation, he attended Prairie View College, in Prairie View, TX. He eventually interrupted his studies and joined the U. S. Army, served a full tour of duty including 12 months in Germany, and was honorably discharged. Upon his return to civilian life, Austin attended Texas Southern University in Houston while also working in Galveston. He subsequently married Evelyn Archie and they had one beloved child: Reginald Kirk, who preceded him in death in 1997. Austin worked for many years as a federal government employee for the U.S. Postal Service. After his retirement, he became a substitute teacher in the Galveston Public School System for many years until his health begin to fail. 

Austin is survived by one brother, Nathan, Sr. of LaMarque, TX; a sister, Vera Whisenton, and husband, Carl of Silver Spring, MD; one remaining uncle, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends. His parents preceded him in death, in 1993, and 1996, respectfully.

A service celebrating Austin's life will be held on Friday, April 20th, at 11:00 A.M. at the Mt. Olive Baptist Church, with a family visitation hour beginning at 10:00 A.M., also at the church.
