Galveston Mayor Lyda Ann Thomas welcomed the crowd and read a letter by the late Sandy Kempner, a Marine who died in the Viet Nam War, and a poem by Major Michael O'Donnell of Springfield, Illinois.
The National Anthem was sung by Elaine Frickey.
The invocation was by LTC Sylvester Ballard. The United States Marine Corps Reserves provided the color guard.
Guest speakers included United States Army Captain Antonio Hernandez, United States Navy Commander Kirk D. Crawley, United States Marine Corps First Sergeant Alfredo Franco and United States Coast Guard Commander Brian Hall.
The keynote speaker was Grady Harrison, president of the Cavalla Historical Foundation.
Following the ceremony at Seawolf Park, many of the participants went to a Memorial Day Ceremony at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Raymond C. Paul Post 880.
