Martha Brown Whitby
E. R. Johnson Family Mortuary

Martha Brown WhitbyMartha Brown Whitby, 87, received her reward of eternal rest on Friday, June 1, 2007, at her residents.

Martha was born on May 1, 1920, to the late Willie and Susie Brown, in Galveston, Texas. She attended public school in Galveston and was a graduate of Central High School. “Lionel's Moma and Upstairs Moma” as she was affectingly known was retired from UTMB Hospital and was formerly employed with Heberts Funeral Home. She was a member of the Smiling Girls Social and Charity Club and the Spiritual True Church where she served as Secretary and choir member until her health began to fail. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ashton C. Whitby Sr.; and siblings, Samuel Lynch, Elizabeth Francis, Sandy Brown, Willie Brown, Lela Stanley and Rosie Lee Phillips.

She leaves with cherished memories, three sons, Bishop Lionell Aslaha (Vivian) of Houston, TX, Ashton C. Whitby, Jr. (Danette) of League City, TX, Kevin H. Whitby of Galveston; one daughter, Shibohn M. Young (Johnny, Jr.) of Galveston; ten grandchildren, Lionell, Jr. (LaToya), Kim (Melvin), Lauren (Chris), Kristen (Shane), Ashton III, Austin, Michelle, Ashley, Terrance, and Byron; eleven great-grandchildren, Rynesha, Alexandria, Taberah, Bianca, Chris, Jr., Taylor, Nicholas, Caela, Darrin, Jr., Mikarrin and Mikilti; three great-great grandchildren, Tamaya, Zhe’Naiya and Jaylon; three brother-in-laws, James Stanley, Sr., Roland Thomas and Lloyd Francis (Nellie), all of Galveston, TX; one sister-in-law, Doris Lynch of Los Angeles, CA; Home Care Assistant, Clarissa Rideaux and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends.

Viewing will be held on Friday, June 8th at E R Johnson Family Mortuary from 3-5PM and will continue from 6-7 followed by a wake until 8PM at the Spiritual True Church (2909 Ave M1/2).

A service celebrating her life will begin at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, June 9, 2007, also at the church with Pastor Jerry Temple officiating. She will be laid to rest in Memorial Cemetery in Galveston, Texas.
