Freedom Days 2007
GHF Underground Railroad Re-enactment
by Jim Guidry
Friday, June 08, 2007

Members of Galveston Historical Foundation's African American Heritage and Education Committee held a dress rehearsal for the Underground Railroad Re-enactment Program "Making of the Underground Railroad: From Slavery to Freedom," which will be part of the Galveston Juneteenth celebration on June 14 from 8:30 to 3:30.

The line-up of characters includes Harriet Tubman, Box Brown, Frederick Douglass and many other nationally known in the Underground Railroad movement but this year also features Lavinia Bell, a slave who worked in the cottonfields near Galveston. Release

Tommie Boudreaux, who coordinates Galveston Historical Foundation's educational re-enactments of Underground Railroad characters, talked to Robert Stanton of the Houston Chronicle about Bell's history.  RealPlayer  Download
