Freedom Days 2007
Dickinson Fourth of July Picnic and Celebration
by Kerry Neves
Thursday, June 21, 2007

Dickinson City Council Member Kerry NevesGood morning folks.  It is hard to believe it is almost the end of June, which means the 6th Annual 4th of July Picnic and Celebration at the VFW is almost here.

This year's event will take place on July 4, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.  It starts immediately after the Pilot Club's Childrens Parade, which starts at 9:00 at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church and ends at the VFW Post 6378, located at 5204 Highway 3.

Awards will be given by the Pilot Club inside the VFW Hall after the parade. The Dickinson High School Gator Band will be marching, so come out and enjoy the parade, then come to the VFW for the Picnic.

The Picnic is an old fashioned Celebration.  There will be hot dogs, chips, soft drinks, snow cones, watermelon and games for kids of all ages, along with lots of music.  The cost is $.25 for most things.  The VFW could definitely use cash contributions to help them cover the costs of the Picnic, which can be mailed to PO Box 1756, Dickinson, TX. 77539.  They can be reached by phone at 281-337-4952.

We have received a donation of 6 bikes, which will be given away during the day to kids attending.  There will also be bicycle helmets given away at the parade and at the VFW.

Local civic groups will be present with information and items to be given away or for sale.  For example, the Dickinson Historical Society will have information on the recently opened Historic Railroad Center, and membership materials for all who want to join the Society.  We will have the book written by Ernie Deats on our City, "Dickinson 1860-1960 - History, Hard Work, Honor," which recently got a great review in the Galveston County Daily News.  Ernie will even be there for part of the day to autograph your copy.  We also plan to have reprints of the book "Dickinson - Taller Than The Pines," which we have acquired through a generous donation by Eldred and Diane Doty.

The VFW is also sponsoring the Patriotic Home Decoration Contest.  If you have your red, white and blue out, let me know at this email address or at my office (281-337-5414) and I'll get the City Council and Mayor up early on the morning of the 4th to judge the entries.  There will cash prizes for the top three entries, which will be announced at the Celebration around 2:00 PM.

This will a good time for all, so plan on coming out for this fun event.  See you on the Fourth of July.
