Roger Alan Scalf, 44, passed away on Sunday, June 24, 2007. He was born on December 6, 1962 in Texas City to Jimmy and Marjorie Scalf. Roger was a US Coast Guard licensed Captain, a former Fire Fighter for La Marque and Mt. Pleasant, Texas where he saved a person from drowning. He had a lengthy career of 20 years as a Fire Fighter and presently worked for the Galveston Fire Department. He graduated from La MarqueHigh School in 1981 and was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church of La Marque. Roger was recognized for a deed of heroism for saving the life of a boy in the Gulf of Mexico and received the Carnegie Medal from the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission.
Roger was preceded in death by his grandparents and niece Allison Scalf. He is survived by his parents; fiancé Lori Prouty; daughter Sarah Grace Scalf; sons Taylor Alan Scalf, Brandon Kyle Scalf, and Brian Matthew Scalf; brother John Raymond Scalf and wife Tanya; nephew Ryan Christopher Scalf; special aunt Lynette “Babe” Cole; god mother Mary Neas; and numerous other aunts, uncles, cousins and very special friends Jay Jacob, Glenn Reddin, Carl Glaze, Raymond Hamilton and his extended firefighting family. We would like to express our gratitude to the rescue responders and UTMB ER personnel who attended to Roger in his time of need. To the firefighters and their wives for being with us during this most difficult time, may God bless each and every one of you.
Visitation for friends and family will be held at James Crowder Funeral Home in La Marque on Thursday June 28, 2007 from 4pm to 9pm. The funeral service will be held at 11am on Friday June 29, 2007 at the First Baptist Church in Texas City at 1400 9th Ave. N., Texas City, TX 77590 with Reverend C. O. Magee officiating. Interment is to follow at Galveston Memorial Park Cemetery, Hitchcock, Texas. Pallbearers will be Jay Jacob, Mark Morgan, Carl Glaze, Glenn Reddin, John Eaton, John Ovalle, and Dave Whitton.
