Olive Joyce Thomas, 63, passed away Thursday, July 12, 2007 at the University of Texas Medical Branch Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. Olive was born in Clarendon, Jamaica where she grew up. Olive moved to England, where she was married and had her first child. She then moved to Canada, where she resided for many years and had her second child. After being recruited by UTMB in 1984, she made her final home in Galveston.
Olive was a registered nurse and worked at UTMB for 20 years. While there, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. In 2005, Olive retired but continued to work in the home health industry where she took comfort in helping sick people. She was a loving and giving person who will always be remembered for her kindness. She will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her.
Olive is preceded in death by her parents, Caiaphas Thomas and Christiana Mclean of Jamaica. She leaves behind her two devoted daughters Charlene Cockett of Brooklyn, New York, Christine Cockett and fiancé Mitchell Steve of Houston, Texas. She is also survived by grandson Dillon Thomas Steve; stepmother Euna Thomas; brother Cecil Thomas; two sisters Hyacinth Thomas and Doreen Powell; nieces and nephews; numerous family members and many friends.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 21, 2007, at 11:00 am in the chapel of J. Levy and Termini Funeral Home in Galveston, Texas.
