L.C. Gillins, Sr.

L.C. Gillins, Sr., 81, affectitionately known by all as “Stringbean,” passed away on Wednesday, August 1, 2007, at UTMBHospital.
L.C. was born on April 12, 1926, in Doylene, LA, to Lemos and Annie Hollingsworth Gillins. He accepted Christ at an early age. He moved to Galveston in his early 20’s and worked at the Grain Elevator for 18 years. “Stringbean” was the owner of Uptown Tavern. He loved his family, friends and riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Kevin Gillins; great grandson, Nathaniel Tisino; brother, Robert Gillins; sisters, Evelyn Jackson, Esther Wilson and Annie Mae Shovan.
He is survived by his wife, Essie Gillins, of Galveston; daughters, Essie Tisino of La Marque, TX; Ann Walton (Willie) of Missouri City, TX; Beatrice Maxey (Charles) of Houston, TX; Felicia Gillins (Booker) of Galveston; sons, L.C. Gillins, Jr. (JoAnn) of Belflower, CA; Curt Gillins (Sharon) of Galveston; Rodney Gillins (Claudia) of Palmdale, CA; stepsons, Ronnie Chatmon (Lori) of Galveston; Donnie Chatmon (Sharon) of Clear Lake, TX; sister, Elsie Little of Galveston; 39 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and a host of other family and friends.
Special thanks go to his friend, Samuel Boyd and wife Dorothy; to the staff of J10A and J2B at UTMB; and to Dr. Cozart and staff for the care they gave our loved one. Viewing will be held on today, August, 8th, from 4-8p.m. at E.R. Johnson Family Mortuary. Homegoing celebration will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 9, 2007, at the Greater St. Matthews Baptist Church in Hitchcock, TX, with Pastor William Randall officiating. Burial will follow at MainlandMemorialCemetery in Hitchcock, TX.
