Curtis Penn Wade, Jr.

Curtis Penn Wade, Jr. (C. P.)

C. P., 88, passed away peacefully on August 28, 2007 surrounded by his loving family. He was born to Columbus and Ida Wade in Palestime, Texas on May 25, 1919. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Addie Bea and William, dear in-laws Emma C. and William G. Thomson, eldest son Curtis P. Wade III, his loving and devoted wife Althea and best feline friend Mr. Cat.

 

Growing up in East Texas, C. P. attended public schools, Sam Houston State Teachers College and then went on to serve his country in the U. S. Army during World War II. Following the war, he became employed with the U. S. Customs as an Inspector, from which he retired after more than 25 years of service. C. P. was especially proud of his assignment to manage the re-dedication of Galveston’s 1851 U. S. Custom House.


On Valentine’s Day in 1942, while on a three-day leave from Camp Bowie in Brownwood, Texas, he married the love of his life, Althea Consuela Thomson. Their devotion to each other lasted more than 62 years and together, they raised 5 children.  C. P. was a loving son, father, husband and friend.

 

C. P. was a man of many talents. He was an accomplished writer, concentrating on short stories, editorials and poetry about all of his interests. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and golfer. He also loved to draw and paint, usually showcasing his well-known wit and humor.  C. P.’s greatest joy was to make others smile.

 

Sincere appreciation goes to the residents and staff of Edgewater Retirement Community, U.T.M.B, Harborview Care Center , Amed Hospices Services and especially to Virnestine Williams.

 

C. P.  is survived by sons; Lance Thomson Wade and wife, Carol, Mark Clayton Wade and partner Paul Mendoza; daughters Suzi Wade Elderman and husband, Joe and Adrienne Wade Mendoza. Grandchildren include loving and devoted granddaughter Stephanie Wade Colelli and husband, Craig, Kelly Wade Galbreath and husband, David, Caroline Wade Grodzin and husband, Noah, Ashley Thomson Wade, Hollie Camille Mendoza, Robert Mendoza (Rob) and Curtis Penn Wade, IV; precious great grandchildren Meredith Anne Colelli and Maxwell Wade Galbreath; and a host of relatives and friends.

 

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 1, 2007 at Trinity Episcopal Church, 2216 Ball, Galveston, Texas with the Reverend Ron Pogue officiating. Pallbearers will be family and friends. If desired, donations may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church, The American Cancer Society or the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (H.S.P.V.A.) in Houston, Texas.
