GULF COAST FILM FESTIVAL TO BE HELD IN SEPTEMBER
Jasmine Guy to Receive Lifetime Achievement Award
Seabrook, Texas - Lights! Camera! Action! – The Gulf Coast Film and Video Festival is holding their annual event, September 14, 15, & 16, 2007. NASA-Johnson Space Center community, Seabrook, Texas will be the home of this out-of- this world entertainment. This event is in its 8th year and has gained international recognition in the Independent Film community. Every year, the festival has celebrities in the film and video industries that are guest speakers and presenters.
This year’s scheduled celebrity guest to appear is film, television and stage actor, Jasmine Guy, who will be receiving the lifetime achievement award.
Jasmine Guy is best known for her memorable role in the hit television series, A Different World. She began her professional career as a concert dancer at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center. Her singing ability carried her to the Broadway stage with many musicals; Dancin’ in the Street, Bubbling Brown Sugar, The Wiz, Leader of the Pack, Beehive, and Grease. Most recently she won high acclaim for her portrayal of Velma Kelly in Broadway’s Chicago.
Ms. Guy’s film and television credits include; Alex Haley’s Queen, Anne Rice’s Feast of all Saint, Eddie Murphy’s Harlem Night, Spike Lee’s School Daze and Bill Duke’s The Boy Who Painted Christ Black. She has made guest appearances on NYPDBlue, Melrose Place and Living Single, among many others.
For the role of “Whitney Gilbert” on A Different World she was honored by the NAACP with 6 consecutive Image Awards. She most recently starred in Showtime’s hit series Dead Like Me with Many Patinkin as “Roxy”. She has added writer to her resume with the biography she penned of Afeni Shakur, the mother of slain rap star Tupac Shakur in Evolution of Revolutionary.
The MC for the evening will be Nellie Gonzales, host of Houston’s new hot and hip show, Houstonisimo on KHOU Channel 11. Area elected officials and people in the film industry will also be celebrity presenters.
This 3 day – 2 night event kicks off Friday evening, September 14 with a meet and greet buffet mixer from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Villa Capri Restaurant on Clear Lake in Seabrook. Films screenings will start Saturday, September 15, with the 8th Annual Cascade Awards Banquet capping the evening at the Endeavor Marina Admiral Ballroom in Seabrook. Sunday, September 16 concludes with final screenings. All film screenings will be held at San Jacinto College – South Campus in their new state –of –the –art theater. There will be opportunities for the festival attendees to meet and mingle with actors, producers and directors from the film and television industry.
The Gulf Coast Film and Video Festival is the creation of Founding Director, Hal Wixon. An actor himself, Mr. Wixon’s mission was to encourage the work of independent filmmaker and promote the art. This became this non-profit festival’s mission and a place to put budding filmmakers in the spotlight.
“This festival was created to showcase the discovery of new and emerging artist,” states Wixon. “The goals for this fun and educational event are to encourage the works of independent filmmakers and promote the concept of film as art, offering awards as a means of educational outreach and expand the awareness of independent film.”
Filmmakers from all over the world submit their films. The festival also showcases the Bay Area-Houston as a location for future films. The festival is supported by numerous sponsors and the Cities of Seabrook, Nassau Bay, and Houston, Texas.
