Louella Harrison Sterling

Louella Harrison SterlingLouella Harrison Sterling, 91, loving wife, Mother, grandmother, and friend to many passed away Monday, August 27, 2007, surrounded by family. She was born on November 16, 1915 in Beaumont, Texas. Mrs. Sterling was a graduate of Prairie View A & M University where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in home economics.
After her graduation, she became a Home Economics Supervisor for the Texas State Department of Education. In this position, she taught home economics classes and monitored and evaluated home economics programs throughout the state of Texas. She also taught in the area of special education for the Galveston Independent School District for forty years. She was one of a select group of African-American educators who participated as pioneers in the integration of the Galveston public schools. During her tenure, she received numerous accolades in recognition of her dedication and commitment to her students.  Upon her retirement, she was honored by the faculty, staff and students from the Alamo Elementary School; they celebrated “Mrs. Sterling Day”.
She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Dr. Leroy Sterling and a much loved brother and sister, Octavia and Edward Harrison.
Louella Sterling served Holy Rosary Catholic Church faithfully for many years. She was a church liturgical reader and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Peter Claver. She was also an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, The Pan Hellenic Council of Greeks, the Prairie View Alumni Association, and Jack and Jill, Inc.
She is survived by a daughter, Joyce Marie Sterling of Washington, D.C.; a son, Leroy Sterling, MD and his wife Lorraine of Houston, Texas; three grandchildren, Jordan Sterling, Alyson Elizabeth Sterling, and Jared Lane Sterling from Houston, Texas; a brother Leslie Harrison of Los Angeles, California; a devoted sister-in-law, Ella Louise Carter of Tuskegee, Alabama; a niece, Cora Elizabeth Fullmore and three nephews: Randall Sterling, Jr., Louis Sterling, and Donald Sterling.  She also leaves a host of grand and great-grand nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Friday, August 31, 2007, at J. Levy & Termini Funeral Home from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.  She will be honored by both the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Peter Claver and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, September 1, 2007, at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, with Father Paul Banet officiating. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Galveston, Texas.
Pallbearers will be Brothers of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.
