Galveston – Joyce Ann (Lhoste) Elfstrom was called to her eternal home on Saturday, October 20, 2007.  She is now at peace and out of pain.

Joyce was born on Galveston Island on February 7, 1937, to Katherine and Eugene Lhoste.  She graduated from Ball High School and worked at Hutchings and Sealy Bank for approximately 11 years but then chose to stay home and take care of her children.  Some years later, Joyce returned to work and worked for Galveston Independent School District at Lovenberg Middle School as a cashier in the cafeteria.  She retired from American National Insurance Company where she worked as a cashier in the cafeteria for 20 years.  Joyce was a very active member of First Lutheran Church to the very end.  She loved all children and taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and Choir School for many years.  For the last several years, she has been the leader of the very active Prayer Chain.  Joyce was devoted to her family and was always ready to do whatever she could for those who needed it.  She always had advice and kind words to say.  She loved the holidays and never forgot what they were really all about.

Joyce was preceded in death by her mother, Katherine Lhoste; grandmothers, Nora Schmidt and Rose Lhoste; grandfathers, Robert Schmidt and Sylvain Lhoste.

Her memory and the cherished times spent with her will be forever remembered by her husband of 49 years, Carroll Elfstrom; two daughters, Kathy Gainer and husband, James; Cheryl Rutledge and husband, Alan; father, Eugene Lhoste; sister, LaNan Hernandez and husband, Josh; the grandchildren whom she cherished deeply: Ryan Gainer, Amy Rutledge, and Brett Rutledge; sister-in-law, Elaine Harris; nieces and nephews: Nanette Dickerson and family; Danny Garcia and family; Steven Garcia and family; Lauren Molis and husband; Cindy Doyle and husband; and Susan Weido and family.  She will also be remembered by many other relatives and friends.

Joyce’s family will receive visitors after 5:00 pm, Tuesday, October 23rd, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home.

A Christian Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 am, Wednesday, October 24th, at First Lutheran Church with Pastor Doug Guthier officiating.  Burial will follow the service at Grace Memorial Park Cemetery in Hitchcock, Texas.

Pallbearers will be Ryan Gainer, Danny Garcia, Steven Garcia, Ronald Doyle, Jimmy Fundling, and Jack Dickerson.  Brett Rutledge will serve as an honorary pallbearer.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Lutheran Church Capital Campaign Fund, 2415 Winnie, Galveston, TX 77550.
