Mayor Bill White invites Houstonians to join him in honoring service men and women by attending the annual Veteran’s Day parade followed this year by Houston Freedom Fest. The headliner for the Houston Freedom Fest concert is country music recording artist Lee Greenwood. Also appearing will be the Texas A&M Singing Cadets and Houston gospel recording artist Barbara Tucker.
The events will take place Sunday, November 11th, 2007 on the steps of City Hall at 901 Bagby.
“Join us in showing our appreciation for the sacrifices of our nation’s veterans,” said Mayor Bill White. “This ceremony reminds us that military service can mean life long sacrifices for these men, women and their families. It is our duty as citizens to welcome home those who have recently gone to war and to support all veterans as a grateful nation.”
The observance begins this year with the customary 11th hour moment of silence, held at 11:00 a.m. on November 11, every year. The moment of silence will take place on the steps of City Hall, near the Hermann Square Reflecting Pool.
A military flyover will mark the start of the Annual Veteran’s Day parade, at 1p.m. Over 125 entries including military divisions, VFW posts, military vehicles, marching bands and local personalities will be there. Special guests marching in this year’s parade will be Vietnam Veterans from the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines. The parade coincides with the reunion of this group of Vietnam Veterans in Houston.
The parade route begins at the corner of Texas Avenue and Smith Street. The procession moves south on Smith Street to Lamar then westward on Lamar, concluding on Bagby.
The Houston Freedom Fest and Veteran’s Concert will get under way at 2 p.m. Located at Hermann Square next to City Hall, The Houston Freedom Fest includes military equipment displays, wellness booths, and speeches from military generals and veterans.
