There were two Veterans Day events on Galveston Island.
The Galveston Island Convention and Visitors Bureau presented the Fourth Annual Veterans Day Salute at Seawolf Park. Listen: RealPlayer MP3
Galveston Mayor Lyda Ann Thomas welcomed the crowd to the park. Keynote speeches were made by Sergeant Jay Bush, representing the United States Army; Captain (Ret.) Dale Salyers, representing the United States Air Force; Lieutenant Sam Teague, representing the United States Coast Guard; Staff Sergeant Matthew J. Lockwood, representing the United States Marine Corps and Captain (Ret.) Morton Winchester, representing the United States Navy.
The event included the formal induction of the USS Stewart to the National Registry of Historic Places. Speakers were Captain C.W. "Swede" Anderson, president of the Texas Navy Association, and Dwayne Jones, executive director of Galveston Historical Foundation.
Galveston VFW Post 880 also held a ceremony at the World War II Monument at 23rd and Broadway.
