Volunteers Pack 2,200 Backpacks for “Saint Nicholas”

Houston, TX – Over 200 volunteers participated in the 2007 St. Nick Packing Party held at the Gilruth Center at Johnson Space Center. Volunteers from area companies and the community joined together to stuff the backpacks with toys and books, which will be used for Volunteer Houston Bay Area’s charitable project “A Visit From Saint Nicholas.”

Supporting Houston and Bay Area youth for 20 years, “A Visit From Saint Nicholas” provides backpacks as gifts to disadvantaged children. Recipient schools are selected where a majority of children qualify for the free/reduced lunch program, and are typically located in an economically disadvantaged area. A total of 10,000 kids at 30 schools in greater Houston benefited from the program this year.

Students attending pre-kindergarten through 3rd grade at McWhirter Elementary in Webster, Calvin-Vincent Head Start in Texas City, K.E. Little Elementary in Bacliff, La Porte Elementary, South Houston Elementary, as well as Kruse and L.F. Smith elementary schools in Pasadena enjoy gifts left by “A Visit From Saint Nicholas.”

Long-time contributors Boeing and USA had over 120 volunteer employees in attendance. Volunteers from other area businesses include Barrios Technology, Cimarron, GB Tech, GHG, Otiltanking Texas City, and Sterling Chemicals.

“Employees are the heart of Boeing's support for "A Visit from St. Nicholas". Since St. Nick's inception in the Bay Area, hundreds of Boeing employees have volunteered their time to the program, demonstrating their community spirit and spreading goodwill to children in need. Employee support for the program has extended to cash grants through Volunteer Houston, bringing together more resources for the St. Nick program to promote the spirit of anonymous giving,” stated Boeing Houston Community Investor Dayni Alba.

“A Visit From Saint Nicholas” is coordinated by Volunteer Houston and a committee of volunteers, and is generously sponsored by local businesses and individual donors. The annual benefit takes place on December 6 – the traditional date that Saint Nicholas is celebrated around the world.
