Remembering Jim Guidry Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership
Galveston County
United States Coast Guard Marine Safety Office
News Release
Thursday, December 06, 2007

HOUSTON - The Coast Guard is celebrating the relocation of Marine Safety Unit Galveston with a ribbon cutting ceremony Friday at 10 a.m. The ceremony is being held at the new location, 3101 FM 2004, Texas City.

In August, 1995, one Captain of the Port Zone was established in the Galveston Bay area when Marine Safety Office Galveston joined operations with Marine Safety Office Houston. This merger resulted in the commissioning of Marine Safety Unit (MSU) Galveston, the first unit of its type in the Coast Guard. In June, 2001, MSU Galveston moved from its previous location in the Galveston Post Office into office spaces at the Army Corps of Engineers building. In October, 2007, MSU Galveston moved into its current location, a building that was constructed specifically for the unit.

Marine Safety Unit Galveston is comprised of 64 active duty, 33 reserve, and three civilian crew members who perform numerous missions, including commercial ship and shore facility safety and security, marine investigations, waterway management, maritime law enforcement, commercial fishing vessel safety and environmental response.

In addition to their regular operational missions, unit personnel are very active within the local community. Unit members are involved with the Big Brothers & Sisters charity organization, they volunteer time working with students at several local schools, and participate in a host of charitable and other activities throughout the year.
