Adding Some Fa La La La Lights at City Hall

City crews finished adding the final festive touches to the row palm trees along the front of City Hall on Wednesday.  All totaled, 19,520 holiday lights sparkle on 11 trees, infusing the block with some twinkling spirit.

In a pilot project originally championed by Council Member Barbara Roberts, City Hall debuts this year as the inaugural location of the City of Lights Program.  Council member Roberts first suggested the City develop a holiday lighting plan at last June’s Budget Retreat.  She and the rest of City Council hope the city’s example will inspire business owners to follow suit and create their own displays, enhancing the island’s overall holiday appeal.

Creating the display was no small feat.  Staff investigated several possibilities, from installing solar powered lights, to burrowing under the street to add electrical power to the medians.  In the end, economics prevailed and electricity was installed to each of the palm trees along the front of City Hall.

The City hopes the project will expand to include Downtown, 61st Street, and other areas of the community in the next few years.  For now, City Hall will be a shining standout on the block for everyone to enjoy.
