MOODY GARDENS© HOSTS 22ND ANNUAL SPECIAL PEOPLE’S BALL CELEBRATING MARDI GRAS WITH BEADS, DANCING AND HOT BIKES TOO

Galveston, Texas… On January 27, 2008, more than 2,000 people with disabilities and their families and friends are expected to attend the 22nd Annual Special People’s Ball at the Moody Gardens© Convention Center. The Special People’s Ball is a free Mardi Gras celebration hosted by Moody Gardens© with approximately 200 volunteers contributing time and supplies.

“The Mardi Gras Ball for Special People provides a safe and accessible environment in which individuals with disabilities have the opportunity to be a part of the Mardi Gras celebration that is so dear to the Galveston community,” said Yvette Schmidt, Volunteer Coordinator at Moody Gardens©

The event is scheduled for 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Festivities will include food, refreshments, plenty of beads, clowns, face painters and a dance contest. Local Krewes, including Krewe Du Vroom with their unique collection of motorcycles, will join the party, making this the only Mardi Gras Ball of its kind in the nation.

Moody Gardens© and the Hope Therapy Program were established by the Moody Foundation in 1982, changing the lives of thousands of people since its inception. In addition to hosting special events such as the Special People’s Ball, SportsFest and Camp Discover Nature, Hope Therapy focuses on Horticulture Therapy, through which individuals with disabilities can improve sensory awareness and motor abilities, regain confidence, and learn new skills to prepare for employment opportunities. The massive greenhouses and the Rainforest Pyramid© at Moody Gardens© are tended in large part by these special clients.
