Joseph Adolph “Joe” Neely, Sr. of Galveston died on February 7, 2008. Joe was born in Merryville, Louisiana, on September 17, 1921, the youngest of the seven children of Collie and Dixie Neely.
He came to Galveston during WWII while serving in the U.S. Coast Guard. It was in Galveston that Joe met his future wife, Galveston native Anna E. Mayer. Following further military service in the South Pacific and the end of the war, Joe returned to Galveston where he and Anna were married. Joe and Anna were and will forever be sweethearts. They had one child, Joseph A. “Joe” or “Jody” Neely, Jr. who preceded him in death. Joe built a successful career in sales and management with Prudential Insurance Company in Galveston and was promoted to management positions in Houston where he worked until retiring back to Galveston in 1987.
In addition to his wife of sixty two years, Joe is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Jake and Mary Neely of Jennings, Louisiana, and numerous nieces and nephews who will fondly remember him as “Uncle Adolph.” This kind and generous man, with his engaging personality and good humor, will be missed by his family and many friends.
