Henrietta "Dot" Burke
Malloy & Son Funeral Home

Henrietta "Dot" BurkeHenrietta "Dot" Burke, 82, of Galveston, passed away Wednesday, April 9, 2008, peacefully at her home after a long battle with Alzheimer's.  She was born December 25, 1925, in Galveston, Texas, to Ben Sbarbaro and Henrietta Gago Sbarbaro.  Dot was part owner of the family business, Burke’s Pet Shop, on 39th and Avenue O for over 40 years, and then Burke’s Grooming, on 34th and Avenue S, where she retired from.

Dot loved to take care of her family.  Every Sunday there was a home-cooked dinner on the table, and yes, it always included a homemade dessert.  She always gave without wanting anything in return.  It didn’t matter who you were, even a stranger, if she had what you needed she would open-heartedly give it freely.  Dot never turned anyone away and never wanted anything in return.

Mom, you were always there for me and always supported me, no matter what, as did Michael and Dad.  You gave me everything I could ever need, but most of all, the unconditional love that blessed my life.  I just want to say, “Thank you.”  I am and always will be proud to call you Mom.  Mom may not have remembered who many of you were, but I found great pleasure that she always knew who I was when I would walk in and she would say, “There’s my baby!” even near the end.  How blessed I was to have two loving mothers.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Walter E. Burke, Jr.; sons, Ricky, Patrick, and Michael; and brothers, John and Benny Sbarbaro.

Dot is survived by her son, Michael Lusby; sister, Agnes Beadle; sister-in-law, Marion Sbarbaro; nieces, Lee McCool, Dana Galbreath, Sue Rogers, Pat Chamberlain, and Linda Neal; nephews, John Sbarbaro, Ben Sbarbaro, and Jerry Sbarbaro; former daughter-in-law, Kari Wise and husband, Roy; friends, Nita Schaper, Betty Leonard, Sue Main, and Mary Anne Galletti; and many great nieces, great nephews, and a wealth of friends.

Dot’s family will receive visitors after 5:00 pm, Sunday, April 13th, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home.

A celebration of her life will be held at 10:00 am, Monday, April 14th, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home with Rev. Hampton Mabry officiating.  Burial will follow the service at Galveston Memorial Park in Hitchcock.

Pallbearers will be Michael Lusby, Roy Wise, Jack Leonard, Travis Main, Chris Homrighaus, and Michael Kelemen.  Honorary pallbearers will be Jackie Clark and Kenneth Main.

Dot’s family wishes to express special thanks to Dot’s childhood best friend, Nita Schaper, for always being there for her – you were her rock!  And to Agnes for all you did during this difficult part of her life.  Thank you both for all the thoughtful lunches and support.  To Ashley Reeves, her live-in caregiver, for the wonderful and loving care that you gave to Dot as if she were your own mother.  Thank you, Ashley, from the bottom of my heart.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Dot’s name may be made to Hospice Care Team, Inc., 1708 Amburn, Suite C, Texas City, TX 77591, or to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, 322 8th Avenue, 7th Floor, New York, NY 10001.
