Maria Elisa Botello

Maria Eliza BotelloMaria Eliza Botello, age 73 of Galveston, peacefully crossed over to be with her Lord, Wednesday, May 21, 2008, at Mainland Center Hospital in Texas City. Funeral services are at 10:00 am Saturday, May 24, 2008 at Carnes Brothers Funeral Home. Entombment will follow at Calvary Catholic Mausoleum in Galveston. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Friday where a rosary will be recited at 6:30 pm.

Maria was born July 26, 1934 in Driscoll, Texas to Geronimo and Carolina Cabrera Alaniz. She graduated high school in Kingsville, Texas before moving to Galveston to attend St. Mary’s Nursing School. Since she was 5 years old, Maria only wanted to be a nurse. She was the charge nurse in the E.R. at St. Mary’s Hospital, with more than 45 years of service until its closing in 1996. She then moved to UTMB where she worked for 5 more years in the Medical-Surgical Unit and the Geriatric Floors before retiring in 2001. Maria loved her children and especially her grandchildren who she would crochet and embroider for. She was an active member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church since 1950 until it merged with St. Patrick’s Catholic Church where she remained faithful until her illness prevented her from regularly attending.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Gregory Botello, sisters, Grace A. Alfaro and Ida  Carolina Torres; and brother, Geronimo “Jerry” Alaniz. Survivors include sons, Gilbert Botello, III and wife Wende of Galveston, and Gary Botello and wife Anna of Dickinson; granddaughters, Emma Grace, Roxanna, Vanessa and Elisa Maria Botello; grandsons, Gary Botello, II, Gilbert Botello, and Jaime Villareal; sisters, Elsa “Monci” Rubio and husband Adan of San Diego, California, Amparo S. Benavides of California, and Cynthia Lee Snider and husband Jason of Hitchcock; brothers, Joe Martin Alaniz and wife Opal of Alvin, and Robert L. Alaniz of Pasadena, Texas; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.

Pallbearers are Gary Botello, Gary Botello, II, Jerry Wiley, Gilbert Arreazola, John Botello, and John Anderson. Honorary pallbearer is John Anderson, Jr.

The family would like to thank Dr. Jeffrey Thorley and Dr. Justin Merszei for the wonderful care given to Ms. Botello during her illness.
