Memorial Day Weekend 2008
Ceremony at Houston Veterans Cemetery

Master of Ceremonies Bill Balleza of Local 2 News, who is a United States Marine Veteran who served in Viet Nam, welcomed thousands supporters of the military services to Houston National Cemetery for the annual Memorial Day ceremony. Listen: RealPlayer  MP3

United States Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison was the first elected official to address the crowd; and she was followed by Houston Mayor Bill White, who brought a proclamation from City Hall. Listen: RealPlayer  MP3

The keynote speech was delivered by retired Army Major General Robert Ivany, who is president of the University of St. Thomas. Ivany has served in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, the Federal Republic of Germany and Vietnam, where he was wounded in action and decorated for valor. Listen: RealPlayer  MP3

Several Members of Congress made remarks at the ceremony.  Others, including Senator John Cornyn, sent regrets that they could not be there. Listen: RealPlayer  MP3

Balleza made closing remarks, which included his public gratitude to fellow Marine Leo Perez, who he credited with saving his life. Listen: RealPlayer  MP3

The ceremony ended with a playing of Taps by two buglers, the firing of rifles and a flyover by the Texas Air National Guard, 147th Fighter Wing. Listen (In Stereo): RealPlayer  MP3
