Carnes Brothers Funeral Home

Merline CantonLong-time Galveston resident Merline Canton, age 80, passed away Monday, May 26, 2008 at Mainland Center Hospital in Texas City. Funeral services are 10:00 am Thursday, May 29, 2008 at Carnes Brothers Funeral Home with Reverend Ray Pinard officiating. Burial will follow at Grace Memorial Park in Hitchcock. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Wednesday.

Merline was born March 12, 1928 in Port Arthur, Texas to William Perry Hays and Mildred Una McNeil Hays. She was a 1945 graduate of Ball High School before she married Nick Canton, in North Carolina on March 31, 1948, her husband of 38 years who passed away in 1986. Merline and Nick made their home and reared their sons in Galveston. She was a faithful employee of Galveston Independent School District retiring with more than 20 years of service. She was of the Christian faith.

Merline was a loving and generous mother to her two sons and daughters in law, Mike and Dory Canton of Galveston and Nick and Paula Canton of Santa Fe; as well as her two granddaughters and their husbands, Casey and Stephen Krause and Michelle and Kent Yeomans of Galveston; two grandsons, Nick Canton, IV of Dickinson and Mike Canton, Jr. of Galveston; three great granddaughters, Chloe Krause, Zoe Krause, and Avalyn Yeoman all of Galveston; and a loving niece Tina Stancil of Portsmouth, Virginia. She leaves many long-time friends with whom she bowled at Island Bowl and played bingo at Boss Bingo, along with friends she traveled with to the casinos in Louisiana, Mississippi and Las Vegas. She also leaves three loving sisters in law, Sophie Pendarakis of Pembroke Pines, Florida, Georgia Hutter of Long Beach, California, and Mary Copin of North Brunswick, New Jersey, along with nieces Mary Pendarakis and Helen Sonenreich and nephews, Anthony Pendarakis and Ralph Hutter.

Pallbearers are Mike Canton, Jr., Nicholas Canton, IV, Stephen Krause, Kent Yeomans, John Snider, and Dr. David Wentling.
