Hi. I’m Pat Patton. I have an interesting guest today who plays a very important role in the future of the Bay Area Houston region. My interview is with Bob Mitchell, the new president of the Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership (BAHEP). Listen: RealPlayer MP3
When Bob assumed the presidency of the Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership on January 1, 2008, he had more than 30 years of experience in the fields of economic development, process controls and manufacturing management in the Houston region.
When I asked Bob to tell us about BAHEP and what BAHEP means to the Bay Area Houston community, Bob said that BAHEP is a member-driven organization that provides leadership to stimulate regional economic development and employment in a range of industries such as aerospace engineering, biotechnology/bioscience, specialty chemical and plastics, and information technology. BAHEP partners with 13 cities in Bay Area Houston and Galveston and Harris Counties to foster economic vitality through regional collaboration. What BAHEP really means is that we have a vehicle in place to bring regional leadership together to get things done.
In April, Bob traveled to Washington, D.C. to speak to Congress on the economic vitality that the Space Alliance Technology Outreach Program (SATOP) brings to the region – a program that is providing solutions for small businesses locally and nationally. Both Bob and Congressman Nick Lampson addressed the Appropriations subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, and Science and Related Agencies to discuss the importance of NASA maintaining a healthy budget.
On May 19th to May 22nd, Bob traveled to Washington, D.C. again to lead BAHEP’s Citizens for Space Exploration (CSE)17th annual Washington, D.C., trip which takes a message to Congress on the benefits of a fully funded, healthy space program.
During the interview when asked what was the most important thing the Bay Area Houston community can do to support NASA/JSC, Bob said that we need to stand united in our support for the space program, and in this matter, everyone’s voice is important. He also said that he would like to encourage the listeners to remember to communicate with their elected leadership and that the power of a letter, or phone call, or email should not be underestimated.
Bob said that if he can ever help any of the Guidry News Service listeners, please contact him at 281-486-5535. The BAHEP website is bayareahouston.com.
When I asked Bob who has made the biggest impact on him and how it influenced his life, he said that it was an a remark that a coach at the La Porte Jr. High school made to him when he was in the 7th grade. Bob said that what the coach did not know was that he had already made up his mind what he was going to do in life and that no one his age was more focused on trying to do the right thing than he was, and from that point on, no one ever had to question his desire or drive to succeed
You can see from the interview that Bob was focused on his goals at an early age, and that his determination and focus brought him success not only in his business career, but also in his personal life. To me, one of the most important aspects of Bob’s success is his focus on his three sons and his family life. We discussed Bob’s coaching college baseball and the importance baseball has played in his life. Bob said that the most important thing baseball teaches is teamwork, and in his mind, teamwork is the most important asset in life.
One of the goals of my interviews is to focus on accomplishing dreams and living lives of excellence. Bob’s personal integrity, his strong belief in teamwork, and his commitment to making a difference in the Bay Area Houston community made him the perfect choice for this interview.
